Rotary Clubs in China
There are currently two Rotary Clubs in mainland China - the Rotary Club of Shanghai and the Rotary Club of Beijing. In addition to the mainland clubs there are over 50 clubs in District 3450 that includes the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau.
Leading Rotary’s efforts to build a relationship with the Chinese authorities and to build a platform for future growth of Rotary clubs in China is the Rotary China Team, led by RI Special Representative Christopher Bramsen and a team of volunteers drawn from the two mainland clubs.
Rotary's Commitment to China
Rotary International has maintained a long-term commitment to China, and in recent years clubs worldwide have contributed financially and otherwise more than USD 117 million towards humanitarian projects throughout the country.
Rotary is also active in efforts to eradicate polio. As part of its Polio Plus program, the Rotary Foundation (a non-profit corporation supported by Rotarians worldwide) authorized a US$15 million grant to the World Bank to fund construction of a polio vaccine factory in Kunming. An additional US$900,000 was allocated to train Chinese medical personnel in various methods of eradicating polio.
About the Rotary China Leadership Team
The Rotary China Leadership Team assists the Special Representative in providing guidance to the Rotary clubs in China.
The Team consists of a number of committees that are responsible for the coordination of the usual Rotary functions. They provide guidance to the Rotary clubs in the PRC and can ask other Rotarians to serve in their committee.
The members of the Rotary China Leadership Team are appointed for a three-year term, which expires at the end of June 2008. The composition of the team can be changed as the need arises.
